How To Care For Your Jewelry
WHAT IS GOLD VERMEIL?
In simple terms, gold vermeil is 925 sterling silver jewelry that has a layer of gold or rose gold on top of it.
HOW DOES GOLD VERMEIL DIFFER FROM GOLD PLATED AND GOLD FILLED JEWELRY?
Gold vermeil has base of 925 silver that is covered with a layer of gold on top of it. This is different from gold plated, which has a base of a non-fine metal, being usually brass or bronze, with a layer of gold on top. Now, gold filled jewelry has a base of silver or any other metal with gold mechanically bound to it. You can now see that these types of jewelry will differ on the gold thickness and base metal used to make them.
HOW DO I CARE FOR MY NEW JEWELRY?
If you want your vermeil jewelry to last a long time, follow these tips:
-
Remove your jewelry before showering, going for a swim at the pool or the beach, as the chemicals and salt activity can speed the process of the gold layer fading.
-
If you happened to shower, jump in a pool or swim at the beach with your jewelry on, no worries. Just make sure to clean your jewelry as soon as possible, before storing them away, by rinsing thoroughly with clean water and drying completely with a soft, clean cloth.
-
Spray your perfume and or lather your body creams well before you put on your jewelry, and preferably when the skin has absorbed the products. This will minimize the contact of the jewelry with the chemicals on your creams and perfumes, hence preserving their lovely gold finish.
-
If you like to polish your jewelry from time to time, that is great! Just make sure to not over do it with your vermeil jewelry, or any other demi fine jewelry for that matter, as you risk warring down the gold layers on top of your accessories.
-
Store your jewelry in a low humidity location and away from direct light, and salt (if you’re an island girl like me), as these factors can contribute to tarnishing of silver jewelry. A great place to store your jewelry is inside the microfiber jewelry pouch I hand or mail your jewelry in, with your purchase. These pouches are designed to protect your vermeil and plain silver jewelry from humidity, light, salt and scratches that may act to tarnish them.
YOU ALSO SELL STAINLESS STEEL JEWELRY; HOW DO I CARE FOR THOSE?
Although the process through which the stainless-steel jewelry is finished with gold is different from that of vermeil jewelry, the fundamentals to keep their gold finish from fading or tarnishing are basically the same as the ones you would follow for vermeil and 925 sterling silver jewelry.
Remember: Gold vermeil is an excellent material, but it does take slightly more effort to care for than silver or gold jewelry.
